"Stretchy" speech is known as slow speech or a reduced rate of speech.
In speech we use the term "stretchy" or slow speech.
Research as shown that by reducing the rate of your speech
stuttering decreases and fluency increases.
Here are some ways you can practice "stretchy speech" at home
- - - Stretchy Speech String - - -
I use this when first teaching a child how to use stretchy, slow speech. It provides a visual and tactile cue to help them learn to reduce their rate of speech

What is it?
A piece of string with beads on it. Have your child be creative and create their own.
How do I use it?
Each bead represents
one word. Pull the bead from one end of the string to the other while saying a
word. Stretch the first sound of the word out (say it slowly) until you get the bead to the other
end of the string. Then finish the word once you get to the other end.
Example: s---------peech.
Start with single
words, then you can add words and move into phrases and sentences.
Example: I----- ha-----ve
a---- ca-------r.
Find a small
empty can, punch holes in the top
plastic part, cut pieces of yarn
and put the yarn through the holes. Put knots on each end (big enough so the yarn will not go through the
holes). Tell the child that he/she is going to give the can hair (you can decorate the can or give it a name to make it
fun), and have the child slowly pull the hair out while practicing their stretchy speech.
